So you’re ready to set sail with us on the majestic Lady Washington! We’re delighted to have you. Here are some tips to have the best experience possible out at sea.
Welcome Aboard
Thirty minutes prior to sailing time, our ship’s program coordinator will be at the top of the dock to check you in. Please arrive early.
Be sure to bring water and a few snacks so your grumbling tummy won’t distract you from the beautiful sights and sounds of the high seas. Granola bars and similar nonperishable snacks are great for a quick energy boost. However, please dispose of any trash or leftovers back on land.
Most people who sail with us have never sailed before — not to worry! The crew will guide you through everything you need to know.
Keep a Keen Eye on the Weather
Before arriving at the dock, be sure to layer up — conditions at sea can, at times, make for a brisk sail.
We highly recommend the use of sunscreen and sunglasses. Throughout all four seasons, the sunlight can be surprisingly strong, reflecting off the water.
We sail rain or shine, and weather is unpredictable, so please prepare accordingly.
Seldomly, when the wind and tide are too strong, our captain will determine that conditions are not safe for sailing. In this case, we will offer you a ticket exchange or refund and hope that you’ll join us when the weather is more cooperative.
Avoid Feeling Under the Weather
Should you feel sick at sea, there is always at least one staff member aboard trained in responding to illness or injury. If necessary, we’ll get you to a doctor ashore as quickly as possible.
It’s important we know of any serious medical conditions before you book to ensure we can provide you with the best experience possible. Bring any medications and inhalers — including spares — you need and tell the staff what you are taking.
Seasickness is nothing to be embarrassed about. However, if you tend to get seasick, we recommend you prepare by using your preferred seasickness treatment according to the directions on the package.
Smoking is strictly prohibited during day sails.

Keep Your Eyes Open for Wildlife
Marine life is everywhere! Be on the lookout, and you might glimpse seabirds, seals, sea lions, dolphins or even whales. Of course, it all depends on the location and time of year — no two sails are the same. The crew will be happy to answer any questions about what you see at sea.
Our average sailing speed varies from 1-5 knots (nautical miles per hour). The maximum speed under sail can be about 7 knots, which is about 8 land miles per hour.
Important Information About Day Sails and Passage Sails
Unfortunately, we no longer allow the public below decks on day sails, so there is no bathroom available on board.
We do, however, have simple marine pump-out toilets on the boat — similar to that of a porta-potty.
While you can use them, you’d likely be happier using the regular restrooms ashore before your sail. Additionally, toilet paper cannot be flushed aboard and must be disposed of in a wastebasket.
For longer passage sails, it’s very important to hydrate in the 48 hours prior to your sailing adventure. Sufficient hydration provides balance and staves off seasickness, allowing you to enjoy your time aboard to the fullest.
All meals are included on passage sails.
