LEGACY GIFTS FOR THE SEAPORT

Grays Harbor Historical Seaport is humbled by those who graciously give to our organization through a bequest in their will. Individuals who wish to make a legacy gift by bequeath can do so using the sample language below. If you already have a will, you can add a bequest to Grays Harbor Historical Seaport with a simple document called a codicil.

Please consult Grays Harbor Historical Seaport and your financial advisor(s) if you are interested in making a legacy gift in order to determine the most favorable tax advantages and ensure that your gift can be received as specified. Specific Sum of Money

“I give to the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, a Washington State nonprofit public development authority (Federal Tax Identification Number 91-1357638), or its successor organization, the sum of [insert the exact dollar amount].”

Rest and Residue of Your Estate (after paying debts, taxes, expenses and other bequests)

“I give to the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, a Washington State nonprofit public development authority (Federal Tax Identification Number 91-1357638), or its successor organization, all [or a stated percentage] of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate.”

Specific Property (ie: real estate, stocks, bonds, digital currencies, artwork, or other items)

“I give to the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, a Washington State nonprofit public development authority (Federal Tax Identification Number 91-1357638), or its successor organization, [insert a description of the particular property].”

Contingent Bequest (e.g., if you are not survived by certain individuals)

“If [name/s of primary beneficiary/ies] do/es not survive me, or shall die within ninety (90) days from the date of my death, or as a result of a common disaster, then I give to Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, a Washington State nonprofit public development authority (Federal Tax Identification Number 91-1357638), or its successor organization, [insert the exact dollar amount, description of property or percentage of residual estate].”

If your bequest is for a restricted purpose, use the relevant language below and designate the particular program or area of activity to be supported.

“I give to the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, a Washington State nonprofit public development authority (Federal Tax Identification Number 91-1357638), or its successor organization, [insert the exact dollar amount, description of property or percentage of residual estate], to be used for [insert desired purpose, fund or department here] programs and activities.”

It is recommended that the following paragraph be added when the bequest is for a restricted purpose

“If, in the opinion of the Board of Directors of Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, it should become impossible, inadvisable or impractical to use this gift for the specified purpose(s), then the Board may, at its discretion, use the gift for other purposes, keeping in mind the original wishes of the donor. In any such alternative application, the support provided by this bequest shall be clearly identified with the name of [donor’s name].”

Before including any restricted provision in your will, please contact Grays Harbor Historical Seaport to ensure that the stated purpose of your bequest is consistent with the organization’s mission and that the amount of the bequest is sufficient to fulfill your intentions. You can add “for its general purposes” to any of the language above to allow Grays Harbor Historical Seaport to apply your gift towards the greatest need at that time. If you do not specify a particular purpose the default assumption is that your gift is unrestricted.
