My name is Bailey Cavender, and I am the new Deputy Director of Grays Harbor Historical Seaport (GHHS). I am excited to work here because I am passionate about the Seaport’s mission, and, as a former crew member, I know just how life-changing the experiences we offer can be. The chance to help expand our reach, and to develop an on-site exhibit space, is something I am very excited about. In fact, ever since I stepped onboard the Hawaiian Chieftain in November 2011 as her Steward/Education Coordinator, I have been designing an exhibit hall for Seaport Landing. As the years have gone by, I have continued to fine-tune it.

Being in the museum field sometimes means you have an interesting educational background, and I am no exception. I hold a BA in English and History from Whitworth University, a BS in Secondary Education from the University of Idaho, and an MA in Archaeology from the University of Idaho. My master’s work dealt with the transportation history of the Pacific Northwest, as well as learning about collections management. My specializations in the museum field, specifically, are collections management and education. Not only do I have fifteen years of museum industry experience, both as a volunteer and as a staff member, but I have five years of experience as a teacher.

I love GHHS because it is a powerful way to educate, train, and build community. As a museum professional and an educator, this is something that has always attracted me to the organization. Plus, when it comes to teaching about maritime history with hands-on elements, Lady Washington is an impressive tool!

It is my honor and privilege to be a part of the legacy of GHHS, first as a sailor, then as a volunteer, and now, as Deputy Director.

Fair Winds and Following Seas,
Bailey Cavender
