Tall Ship Youth Adventure Program

In the summer of 2008, 25 Grays Harbor County youth will set sail on an all-expense paid, two-week voyage of self-discovery in the remote San Juan Islands of Washington State aboard the tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain, and in the longboat Capt. Matt Peasley as part of the Historical Seaport’s Tall Ships Youth Adventure Program. This innovative youth development program is co-sponsored by Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, the American Sail Training Association, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and local businesses. This co-ed program will provide an opportunity for underserved and "at-risk" Grays Harbor youth aged 13 to 16 to set sail on a fifteen-day hands-on learning adventure that integrates math, science, journalism and art with leadership training and personal development. Participants will learn by doing and will assume increasingly greater responsibility as their skill levels increase.
Program Schedule
- July 19 - 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m: Pre-program meeting; Sail aboard Lady Washington from Aberdeen to Westport.
- August 3: Meet in Aberdeen for transportation to Washington Park, Anacortes, Wash. Set up base camp, longboat orientation and practice.
- August 4 - 8: Join Lady Washington via longboat to begin an exploring expedition into the San Juan Islands.
- August 8 - 10: Depart Lady Washington for two-day camp and exploration of Patos Island.
- August 11 - 15: Join Hawaiian Chieftain by longboat; continue exploration of the San Juan Islands.
- August 15: Depart Hawaiian Chieftain for Aberdeen.
- August 23 - 24: Post voyage meeting, work on producing final expedition report, Aberdeen.
Scholarship Information
- Twenty-five fully funded spaces are available (value of $1,950 each).
- Scholarships are available to both boys and girls.
- Applicants must be “underserved” or “at-risk” youth between the ages of 13 and 16 years old at the start of the program. (July 19, 2008)
- Applicants must be residents of Grays Harbor County.
- Applicants need a Reference Letter from a school, teacher, counselor, juvenile court, or a Grays Harbor Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee member.
- Applicant must fill out and submit a completed application package. (Adobe Reader required.)
- Applicants must be genuinely interested, and make a commitment to actively participating in this program.
- Applicants may not be court involved as a result of criminal activity.

Completed applications must be received at the GHHSA offices no later than June 23, 2008.
Applications will be reviewed by a committee including representatives from local schools, Educational Service District 113, and the Grays Harbor Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee. Applicants will be selected July 2, 2008.
